With all of the free advertising places popping up and gaining popularity the work at home scammers and schemers are having a ball. I was recently searching for some legit work at home jobs to post at It's Free and was amazed to see how many are posted everyday and all over the country.

So how can you tell if it's a legit job offer or a work at home scam or scheme? There are some things you can watch out for. Most real job opportunites will include a business name, a job title, etc. The schemes will always promise things like "no experience required", "start immediately" and "Make easy money". Watch out for the terms "join my team", this typically translates to joining an MLM unless they are giving you the company name upfront.

You will also get to be familiar with terms like "Test products for companies" and the poster will make it seem like a job but they are really trying to get you to sign up for an offer site. The same thing for "Research Participants needed", the poster wants you to sign up through their affiliate link for an offer site or survey site.

Keep in mind, many focus groups DO post their openings on these advertising sites but they always tell you what company they are, they never just ask you to click on a link without giving you the details up front.

Contactthem Scam?

I recieved this email this morning and with all the promises of making a great amount of money from home just by advertising their links I had to check it out.

"Hi, We've seen your website at http://www.katieshugs.com/ and we love it! We looked at your traffic rank and your link popularity. With that kind of traffic, we will pay you up to $4,800/month to advertise our links on your website. If you're interested, read our terms from this page

LINK AND NAME REMOVED

The ContactThem Network"

So of course I had to go digging and find out if ContactThem is a scam or if this was a real offer to advertise on my website.

It didn't take long to find out what was going on. Contactthem is owned by Stephan Ducharme who you might remember as "TheFreeAdGuru".

Still, making $4800 a month just for placing an ad on my site seems like a great deal. Well that isn't exactly the case. The ContactThem software lets you dig up information and statistics from many databases. Why would you want to do that? Well so you can send all those people a nice little email like the one I recieved and hopefully they will sign up under you as an affiliate.

So basically.. it's a spam email and the software makes it easy for you to spam others.

  You will work 1-4 hours a day in your area, depending on how many tasks are assigned to you.

Now if you were able to visit the website you will notice that the "job" is very well publicized. Everything is about the "job".. although there is a little about the services they offer.. Plus there is a news blurb from November 07 about a job opening.

The first thing that screams "run!" at you should be that they want you to open a bank account. Then if you read between the lines you will see that this sounds just like a fancy way of saying "payment processor".... bad bad bad..

I decided to dig a little deeper and ran a whois on the site as well.. look what comes up:

One of the funnest ways to work at home is by blogging. Whenever I mention blogging as a way to make money from home I get a standard response. People don't understand how it works or how to make blogging work for them.

You can make money with a blog by using google adsense to generate income. You can also sign up with blogitive and payperpost and post advertisements for them. You can also use affiliate marketing through cj.com or linkshare. These are the traditional ways to make money with a blog.

Another great way is to write a blog for a company or website. More and more companies are finding out that blogging is a great way to get more traffic and therefore more customers.

Why do we fall for the scams?

This is easy to answer and hard to answer all at the same time. It seems like when people in general get on the internet they tend to believe whatever they see. Kind of like believing whatever you read in a newspaper or watch on television.

For instance why do you think those websites promising hundreds of dollars a day while you sleep are still up and running? Ever see the websites promising data entry jobs and they have thousands of companies in their database you can work for? All you have to do is pay a one time fee of $39.95 and of course this is the discounted price for one week only. Bet if you go back a month from now they are still offering the discounted price. I would also bet that once you pay for access to their wonderful data base you will find out there is no job at all. Just a way to run a pay per click business and that business will cost you a lot of money if you don't understand what you are doing.

These places are still in business because we make it profitable for them to be in business. With the mindset of it it is written it must be true we fall prey to their promises and send in our hard earned money.

The internet is really not any different than the outside world. The internet does offer us a information and a lot of it on any subject we wish to explore but it cannot make jobs magically appear with just your credit card number. It cannot promise you work instantly. Just because it is written doesn't make it so.

Before you hand over that credit card number do some research and make sure you know exactly what you are signing up for. Stop and think about what it is you might really be purchasing and make sure you will be able to live with your decision.

This is just awful and wrong.. if you get an email like this please report it immediately to your local police and even the FBI. (there is a place on their website)

Wahm arrested

Here is an article I hope a lot of people see. I really don't think this poor lady knew she was doing anything wrong. It also explains what exactly is going on with those payment processing scams.

This lady answered an ad for an overseas job. She thought she would be helping the "company" collect money locally and then she would wire the money to the company.

The thing to remember when you see these types of jobs because they often have different descriptions is "why they really need someone to do this type of work". It really never makes sense from a logical standpoint.

Another thing to ask yourself is "Am I feeling desperate?" If you are feeling desperate you become easy prey for these scam artists. I have felt that frustrating sense of despair when searching for a way to work from home so I understand it. Just don't let it overcome your sensibilities when searching. There are real ways to work from home, these ad's just aren't going to be the way.

When they first started up I was intrigued by the idea but wasn't sure it would really pan out. Well.. turns out they just aquired 6 million dollars in funding! That isn't the interesting part.. it's who is helping them out.. Jeff Bezos, Rod Canion, Jack Gill and others. Jeff Bezos is the founder of Amazon.com... this is quite a feat if I do say myself. Don't pay for free advice

This isn't exactly a scam post but just advice. I was just reading about a website that charges people an amazingly astounding amount of money just to help them get their websites good rankings in the search engines. One of the partners was even nice enough to leave a post about how they have helped people. His defense was along the lines of telling everyone a "secret". His secret was that you could use different terms as your keywords and get good rankings.

Guess what? This isn't a secret! This information can be found anywhere. In fact I will give it to you for free:

When you are writing the content for your website give some thought to the keywords you want to rank high for. Keep in mind that some keywords have a lot of competition. So if you are writing a website about working at home, the keywords "work from home" will have a ton of competition and you will not rank too high. Think of other terms that someone might think of like "how to work at home". Incorporate this phrase into your content for instance your opening paragraph might be "Would you like to learn how to work from home?". Make sure you list the phrase "how to work from home" in your meta tags and voila! Eventually you might have some good rankings for "how to work from home".. Not a big secret at all.... :)

Weird affiliate programs

Here is something that has been on my mind for a couple of days now. I keep running across these "programs" and you all know how I feel about that, but I am just amazed that people are falling for this. They are under a lot of different names but the basic premise is that you first purchase an e-book, then you are immediately made an affiliate of the "program", you get others to buy the e-book and become affiliates and you make money from their getting people to buy the ebook and become affiliates, and so on and so forth. This goes on for about 7 levels and sometimes more.

First why would you buy into a program like this? Because they make big promises. What is wrong with buying into a program like this? It seems a lot like another version of the whole 12 daily pro fiasco.

You can easily become an affiliate for free by signing up with clickbank, shareasale, linkshare etc. You won't get paid 7 levels deep of course but there is a reason for that.

Typically most affiliate programs pay on one or two levels, you never have to pay to become an affiliate and you aren't expected to post ads like crazy. Save your money and sign up for free!

Setting the paid survey world straight

Lately I am learning that the survey world is a lot like the data entry world. For most of us data entry means we will get a job with a company and that company will ask us to, let's say, enter the data from their invoices into a computer. We send the invoices back and get paid. Simple enough right? In the internet world of working at home data entry means you start your own little business entering ads for ebooks and other products at Clickbank. This can be pretty devastating to someone who was hopeful and paid their $40 to find this out!

The survey world is getting pretty close to that fine line. A true survey company will ask you to sign up and you will be asked a lot of questions to define your personal demographics. The questions are typically things along the lines of whether or not you live in a city or a rural area, how old you are, how many kids you have and their ages. Your age, whether or not you are married and other typical and standard questions. Once you are signed up you will start recieving screeners in your mail. Typically the screener will only offer you the chance to be entered in a drawing. The screener is just that. Your answers will determine whether or not you make it into the actual study. When you are invited into a study this is when you find out what the study is about and what it pays. Some studies will just give you a product to test and take a survey about, other studies will give you a product to test as well as payment for completing the study. Some studies will be online bulletin board discussions that pay very well and others will ask you to test well known websites and get paid for it. The possibilities are endless but you have to choose the right companies to sign up with.

I hear over and over from people that they were told Panda Research was legitimate but they haven't gotten anything for their time yet. The same thing with TreasureTroopers and other similar places. These places often will advertise that you can get a $500 gift card to The Gap just for completing a survey. This would be so great! The bottom line is that this can happen but they also want you to sign up for special offers like a 30 day trial to AOL or an online book club. To "complete" some of these offers you also usually need to spend a certain amount of money. These places are NOT scams as they often get called but they also are not your typical survey companies.

Use a good free list to sign up with the survey companies and be aware that you will not get into every study. Some people get into ten a month and other people get only get in on one every couple of months. You won't make a steady income but if you go into it with the attitude that you are going to have fun and make a difference in the products you will be buying you will really enjoy the real survey world.

How to recognize a scam

Here's the headline from a neat little flyer in this morning's mail... "You Can Make $1,734 Each Week Working Part Time From The Comfort Of Your Favorite Easy Chair!" I found my mind lazily drifting to a familiar scene... Ahhhhhh... the Yucatan Peninsula. Tiny droplets of water coalesced on the outside of my glass in the warm tropical breeze. They sparkled and cascaded in luscious streams of condensation down the sides of the glass before falling onto the brilliant white sand below.

The rum in my drink was cleverly concealed in the enticingly sweet mixture of coconut and kiwi. My mind was dreamily transcendent in the warm tropical air.

Though the alcohol in my drink was evasively masked, the roll of hundred dollar bills in my right pocket was becoming more uncomfortable with the passing of each blissful second. I would have to find a way to spend this burden before long. I considered scuba diving, or perhaps I should go ahead and buy that yacht and THEN scuba dive...

Do you see why these headlines work? Your favorite fantasy is skillfully evoked by the trickster behind the headline. The lure of easy money and playful days is hard to resist...

... unless you learn to see the scam behind the words!

The scam artist always goes straight for your wallet!

A legitimate work at home opportunity does not require any money up front before you will get more details regarding the opportunity.

It works like this... first the scammer will entice you with easy money, easy work, and tell you to imagine "what will you do first with all that money? Pay off bills, buy a new car, take a vacation?" Then, they ask for $49 "just to prove you are serious", or $29 for the "work-at-home kit" which includes "everything you need to get started."

Real work at home jobs leave nothing to the imagination.

Everything is up front. You know exactly what you're getting, how you get it, how to do it, use it, stretch it, stand on it, twirl it... well, you get the idea.

You can also reach someone with your questions, either by e-mail or phone.

Now let's dig a little deeper. Let's say, for example, you are looking for a typing job you can do at home. What can you expect from the employer?

They don't ask you for money.

They will ask for your qualifications. They will require proof you are qualified. This is done by looking at your resume, through references, phone interviews, by submitting examples of your work, and so on. Essentially, you will give up your time in the beginning, not your money.

The employer will qualify applicants. This means they will weed out the under-qualified by listing requirements for the jobs, such as typing speed, keying speed, certificates, and so on.

Generally, you should expect that a home employer seeking telecommuters will ask of you the same things he would ask any applicant that walks into his office.

Two Common Scams

These are two of the most common scams. The ones that fill your mailbox and tell you to call it a "cashbox."

1. Envelope Stuffing

Here is a common envelope stuffing scenario...

You read an ad or get a piece of junk mail claiming that "Aunt Edna" makes $1,845.00 every week by doing fun and easy work fight from her favorite armchair. They say you'll earn $1 or $2 or some other amount for every envelope you stuff.

They'll ask for an up front fee of $29.95 or more just to make sure "you're serious."

You pay the fee and send off for the package. After all, they guaranteed your satisfaction with their envelope stuffing starter package.

You pay the fee only to find out you earn your $1 or $2 by advertising the envelope stuffing program. You place an ad asking people to send you a dollar to find out about the envelope stuffing program. That's how you earn $1,845.00 every week. One dollar at a time.

Uh huh.

Or they might tell you to purchase a mailing list and send out a thousand or more of their "special sales letters." The letter you send out is the very same letter you received.

Now then, for a mailing of five thousand letters you'll need $1,650 worth of stamps and anywhere from $200 to $500 for printing and materials (Oh, didn't they mention that in the starter kit?). If you want a mailing house to fold and stuff the letters, that'll be extra. But wait, did I mention that you'll need to rent 5000 names? Oh, and don't forget...

Uh huh.

If a company says they will pay you $1 or $2 for every envelope you stuff, think about this...

A mailing house or printer can do this same job for less than 10 cents per piece. Even big jobs don't add up to more than 50 or 60 cents per piece. Does it really make sense to pay you $1 when the same job can be done for a tenth of that cost?

This is a big business. There are companies promoting these envelope stuffing programs making many thousands of dollars every year from people who send in those up front fees. Click here to learn more about this scam.

2. Assembly Work

This one appeals to many potential home workers. Crafting seems to have a feeling of "doing good work." Your craft will be appreciated and admired by someone out there.

The scam goes like this...

The assembly company sends you an information packet that really gets your blood pumping. All you have to do is send in your money (add $14.95 for express delivery!). They'll send you step-by-step instructions and all the materials.

Now, you're not allowed to buy the materials yourself. To insure quality and uniformity of the product, you must use the provided materials. OK, sounds reasonable you say. You send in your money.

You tear open the box when it arrives and find...

... barely legible instructions and materials far inferior to what you could have purchased on your own. But what the heck, you've gone this far, might as well build it.

You build it, you send it in, you wait.

You wait.

You wait.

You call.

No answer. Leave a message.

You wait.

You get a letter from the "company." Your assembled craft was rejected because of this, and this, and that. Now there are variations on this rejection scam, but the bottom line is they got your money.

Working independently from home...

...is one of the most rewarding lifestyles you can have. However you won't find your opportunity in a letter where the dollar signs are wielded like candy on Halloween night.

So before you get that "I just licked a thousand envelopes and forgot to buy $370 worth of stamps" feeling, just do your research and use common sense when evaluating a money making opportunity.

I just wanted to catch up with everyone and let you know I haven't falled off the earth. We have family in town this week, a family reunion and camping trip planned for this weekend and I have been working on helping a friend get his websites up and going and I will be trying to help promote his e-book. The best I can figure out on this is that you are sent an email with an opportunity to be a tutor. The job is as an online tutor not in person. Once you apply you start recieving a ton of emails about getting an education online and offline. Get paid for reading email. Sounds like a pretty nice and simple way to make some money huh? A lot of people do read emails and have learned how to put this plan to work for them. I don't believe you ever make a whole lot but if you can spend a few minutes a day and bring in a few bucks why not? The idea is that a site is set up and businesses pay for advertising. They like this kind of advertising because you have to look at their ad if you want to be paid.

Of course there have to be sites that set up a program, get advertisers and want you to read the emails but then they don't pay.

The members at wahm have been keeping a great list of the sites that don't pay. Before you sign up to read emails take a look and make sure that site isn't on this list.

A fantastic way to earn money from home and one in which I wish I could spend the time to do is to make scrapbooks. You can make scrapbooks with all the great little details, add stickers, borders, embellishments all the fun stuff but leave room for some pictures and journaling. You would be amazed how many people will pay for these books!

There are a lot of people who love the look of scrapbooks and want to preserve their pictures and memories but who don't have the time to scrapbook. There are also a lot of people who believe they just don't have the talent to scrapbook their pictures. This is where you come to the rescue and make money at the same time!

I have seen mini scrapbooks sell for $50 or more regularly on ebay. Imagine what you can sell a full size 20-25 page album for? I would guess an easy $100 or more depending on the person.

You can also advertise around town and actually collect someones pictures and set up a theme with them. These books you can charge more for. The going rate last time I checked was around $20 a page!

This is an opportunity that would fall under freelance writing but I never gave it much thought until this past week.

A friend of mine has written an e-book which you can see at www.dearcarl.com. After looking at his e-book and what it offered it brought to mind a lot of things for me.

I had always thought of e-books as "schemes", most sell information that might be useful to some people but most of the people who buy them find that they are disappointed.

Now granted most of my experience with e-books is in the work from home field so we are talking about a lot of books that claim you can make money typing or doing data entry and then they tell you how to do the whole clickbank thing basically.

What I realized after looking over Dear Carl was that you could (and people do) write an e-book that is valuable and worthwhile. You can also sell it and make money!

What do you think? 419 scam? Phishing? Both? Just because it is from France instead of Nigeria, some people are thinking it might be legit and taking them up on it. I heard from one person that the first check he recieved was counterfit.. Use your common sense whenever you are thinking of applying for a "job"....

First email you recieve after applying:

You can read the contract at the end of this email.
You can print the last page of the contract, sign it, make one picture of the signed page (digital picture if you have no scanner) and send this picture with signature back to us via email.

In order to start your job today we have some requirements:

If due to bank charges, transfer fees, or the like, Raa-Q Software Inc. should receive less than its invoice amount, Raa-Q Software Inc. will find another payment method more reliable. The fees for any transfer that the Representative does are supported by Raa-Q Software Inc.

Should payment in full of any invoice (aside from such shortfalls) not be received by Raa-Q Software Inc. within 48 hours after REPRESENTATIVE'S processing, Raa-Q Software Inc. will TERMINATE the contract and the Representative will be prosecuted by law.

In the event that any amount remains unpaid 48 hours after the sale, Raa-Q Software Inc. may discontinue, withhold, or suspend services to Representative Failure of Representative to pay in no way relieves the Partnerï¿½s obligations to make full payment.

4.5. Raa-Q Software Inc. hereby agrees to pay any and all attorney fees, court costs, and related expenses incurred by Raa-Q Software Inc. the collection of any amount due it.

4.6 The commission percentage for Representative services will be subtracted by Representative and represents 10% from every processed amount.

4.7 Responsibility for all payment transfer fees will be supported 100% by Raa-Q Software Inc.

5. Duties of Representative

5.1. Technical Support: Representative will support Representatives by providing support in the local language of the Representative's main location.

If the Representative have one pending payment and the cash method is unknown by the Representative, Raa-Q Software Inc. will support 100% the Representative with information and assistance as needed.

5.2. General: In carrying out this agreement, Representative will conduct itself in an ethical and lawful manner, will exercise its best efforts to achieve a high level of customer satisfaction, and will do nothing to bring the reputation of Raa-Q Software Inc. into disrepute.

The Representative will NOT offer information about Raa-Q Software Inc. to third parties.

6. Duties of Raa-Q Software Inc.

Raa-Q Software Inc. is responsible for ALL processing fees, for ALL transfer fees and the Representative will subtract ALL these fees from the final amount that have to send to Raa-Q Software Inc. as a payment for it's services.

7. Rules & Regulations

Raa-Q Software Inc. may impose reasonable rules and regulations regarding the use of its services from time to time.

8. Limitation of Raa-Q Software Inc. 's Obligation & Liability

8.1. Raa-Q Software Inc. 's liability to any end customer of any Software or other Raa-Q Software Inc. products is limited to the amount paid to and received by Raa-Q Software Inc. for products and software.

9. Confidentiality

Representative acknowledges that by reason of its relationship with Raa-Q Software Inc. hereunder, it may have access to certain information and materials relating to Raa-Q Software Inc. 's products, customers, software technology, and marketing strategies that is confidential and of substantial value to Raa-Q Software Inc. , which value would be impaired if such information were disclosed to third parties.

Representative agrees that it will not use in any way for its own account nor for the account of any third party, nor disclose to any third party, any such information revealed to it by Raa-Q Software Inc. . Representative further agrees that it will take every reasonable precaution to protect the confidentiality of such information. In the event of termination of this agreement, there shall be no use or disclosure by the Representative of any such confidential information in its possession, and all confidential materials shall be returned to Raa-Q Software Inc. or destroyed. The provisions of this section shall survive the termination of the agreement for any reason. Upon any breach or threatened breach of this section, Raa-Q Software Inc. shall be entitled to injunctive relief, which relief shall not be contested by Representative.

10. Relationship of the Parties

The relationship between Raa-Q Software Inc. and Representative is that of employer/employee. They shall not be construed as being joint ventures, franchiser/franchisee.

This agreement is a commercial agreement between businesses, not a consumer agreement. Representative has no authority, apparent or otherwise, to contract for or on behalf of Raa-Q Software Inc. , or in any other way legally bind Raa-Q Software Inc. in any fashion, nor shall Representative be authorized to make any representations about Raa-Q Software Inc. or its services other than to set forth Raa-Q Software Inc. 's responsibilities as outlined in this agreement.

11. Disputes

The parties shall attempt to resolve all disputes arising out of this agreement in a spirit of cooperation without formal proceedings. Any dispute which cannot be so resolved (other than the collection of money due on unpaid invoices) and other than the injunctive relief referred to in paragraph 9 shall be subject to arbitration upon written demand of either party. Arbitration shall take place at another location if the parties so agree.

12. Terms & Termination:

This agreement shall run until the end of the current quarter. The initial and minimum term of this Agreement is for 3 months. This Agreement shall automatically renew for a similar term thereafter, until terminated by either party with 30 days prior notice unless terminated in one of the following ways:

12.1. By either party, by notifying the other in writing by end of any given year that this agreement will not be renewed, with 2 weeks notice in advance. If Representative sent the notice, must process all payments already sent to his address until job will be ended. If Representative will not process the payments will be sued by Employer in order to recover the fees and lost money.

12.2. By Raa-Q Software Inc. , upon 48 hours written notice, if Representative breaches any material and substantial provision of this agreement and has not cured by the end of the 48 hours.

12.3. Representative becomes more than 48 hours in arrears in payment of its account with Raa-Q Software Inc. ;

12.4. By Raa-Q Software Inc. immediately, if Representative attempts to assign all or any part of this Agreement without Raa-Q Software Inc. 's prior written approval;

12.5. By Raa-Q Software Inc. immediately, if Representative fails to cause Raa-Q Software Inc. to be informed in writing immediately on the happening of any event specified in this section;

13. Nonassignability

Representative's rights and obligations under this agreement may not be transferred or assigned directly or indirectly without the prior written consent of Raa-Q Software Inc. , which consent shall not be unreasonably refused.

14. Partial Invalidity

If any provision of this agreement is held to be invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, then the remaining provisions shall nevertheless remain in full force and effect. Raa-Q Software Inc. and Representative agree to renegotiate in good faith any term held invalid and to be bound by mutually agreed substitute provision.

15. Notices

All notices may be sent by email or express mail to the email address, or address most recently provided and will be effective upon transmission. Evidence of successful transmission shall be retained.

16. Entire Agreement, Modifications

This agreement sets forth the entire agreement and understanding between the parties and merges all prior discussion between them. Raa-Q Software Inc. may make changes to this agreement upon thirty (30) days' written notice to Representative, advising of the change and the effective date thereof. Utilization of Raa-Q Software Inc. services by Representative and/or its customers following the effective date of such change shall constitute acceptance by Representative of such change(s), unless Representative objects in writing to such changes, in which case the changes shall not take effect until there is written consent to other arrangements by both parties.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the parties hereto, intending to be legally bound hereby, do hereby execute this instrument, with each signator warranting its authority to enter into this agreement on behalf of the party it represents.

Can you make money taking surveys?

Yes you can. It does take time however. There are also a few secrets you need to know. Well they aren’t really secrets, mostly tips.

You have probably seen over and over how you can make hundreds of dollars an hour taking surveys. This isn’t quite the case. You can make a couple of hundred dollars for a couple of hours of time and this happens more often than you think but you will not make that kind of money everyday or even every month.

When you first sign up with a survey company you will fill out your profile. This is the information the company will use to match your demographics with a particular survey. In other words if you don’t have children they don’t want to waste your time and theirs by having you fill out a survey about children’s cough syrup.

Some companies will also offer additional profiles. It is important to take the time to fill these out as well.

Once they have you on record they will generally send you an email when they have a survey that might fit your demographics. The email will direct you to a screener. Most of the time the screeners will not offer you a paid stipend, but the chance to be entered in a drawing. A lot of people delete these emails because they only want to be paid for their time. They don’t want to be entered into a drawing. What they don’t realize is that the screener is what will get you into the study. If you don’t take the screeners you will never have the chance to be offered payment or a product test for your time. There are only a couple of survey companies that always offer money even for the screeners and those companies sometimes have screeners that don’t offer money upfront as well.

Another thing to consider is that for the first few months you will get a few screeners and probably not qualify for the actual studies. If you keep at it you will start seeing more and more product tests and paid offers. This is one of the biggest keys. The survey companies want to know that you are serious and not a picky survey taker. They need your help with all of the surveys. Show them you mean business and they will reward you with more and more offers.

Use a good survey list. Most of the lists that you pay for and most of the free ones include survey sites that aren’t really survey companies at all. They are places that want you to complete “offers”, they make themselves look like legitimate survey companies but they are basically going to send you a lot of spam.

Join a community where you can keep up to date. The members know a lot about taking surveys and you can find out which companies are causing people headaches and which ones are great.

Most of all, take surveys to shape the market and have fun.

With the advent of some popular television shows, "flipping" has become a phenomenon that everyone wants to get into. If it's something you are thinking about as an easy way to make money from home there are some things you should know. A number of websites have popped up that claim you can use their money for the purchase, repairs etc. They train you in how to find homes and place bids. So all you have to do is some research to find some good properties, take care of getting the repairs done, submit a bid and then when all is said and done you get ten to fifteen percent of the sale price. What a great deal! Here is the catch. I have seen one company that charges $5000.00 for the training! Typically these places are also only willing to place really low bids so if you live in an area where the general cost of a home is $300k your bids will probably not get accepted. The one company I researched in this had a pretty low reputation among the people who had joined. Although I did hear of people getting their refunds pretty fast in all fairness.

You can make good money by holding a garage sale. Holding a garage sale provides an outlet for unwanted items, which other people are looking for, and will pay good money for.

Be sure to check with your local officials regarding laws and regulations of garage sales.

Acting and extras

Extras needed! I just read about this little scheme in the newspaper yesterday and thought it was a good one to bring to your attention. It isn't exactly a work at home type business but if you are a stay at home mom or dad I could see where it would be tempting.

The ad's read that actors and extras are needed for walk on and crowd scenes, no experience required etc. Sounds great. Here is your big break!

Here is how the scheme really works. After you contact them they tell you that they have a need for extras in a movie being made in say Hawaii. They will pay you by direct deposit and you will make $3000 or so for just doing a few days work. They will obviously need your bank account and routing numbers so you can be paid. They also need you to contact their Travel Department to make arrangements for your airfare. They want you to use their Travel Dept to make the arrangements just so they know that you are serious and to make sure you get the tickets. Of course you must pay for the airfare. You call make the arrangements and probably give your credit card company. The day you are supposed to leave you get to the airport only to find out you have no tickets and your bank account is now compromised.

If you are applying to be an actor do some research and make sure it is a reputable company. When you think of the amount of actors out there on lists waiting to be called for any opportunity what are the chances you are really getting picked from answering a newspaper ad. Now keep in mind there are always legitimate acting opportunities in most cities, there is typically some kind of casting call and audition and you will be able to tell that everything is on the up and up. Slow down and take some time to look into things before handing over valuable information.

After giving some thought to the whole PayPerPost controversy I decided to give it a shot. This is why. My work deals primarily in the work at home scam field. As you know, there are a lot of different types of people. There are people who use deception to get you to spend money to work at home and there are people who will tell you the truth. I have talked a lot about business ethics when you are working at home and I believe the same thing applies to PayPerPost. You will have people who will write articles and give product reviews without ever even looking at the website they are talking about. That is how our world is and no one can make it perfect. Regardless of the field you will have people who decide to use it to their advantage and they won't care what anyone thinks. As bloggers we are supposed to be transparent and we don't have to give that up. There is a reason your readers trust you. They have come to know you and believe in you. The bloggers who are using PayPerPost just to make money with no regard to their readers by giving false reviews or not disclosing that it is a paid review will soon lose their readership.

On the flip side you will also have bloggers who use the PayPerPost opportunity exactly the way it was meant to be used. They will look at the website or product and if they like it and if it fits in with their blog they will write a good review. If they can't give an honest and good review they will skip over that opportunity and look at the next one. Those of us who are willing to disclose and only give honest reviews will maintain and grow our readership and that trust will not be affected.

I looked at three opportunities today. One I couldn't find enough information about to be sure it was good and fit in with my beliefs so I didn't write about it. The other two I did write about. This is one of them..disclosure can be a good thing!

Payperpost. Wow! I just found out about this website and started to sign up but then I decided to do a little research. It's amazing how much controversy one website can produce in such a short time frame!

Payperpost matches up advertisers with bloggers. The blogger can sign up and then view a list of available offers. The offers pay anywhere from $5 to $10 currently.

Here is where the controversy starts. Payperpost does not require a blogger to disclose that they are being paid to give favorable reviews of the products. Most people feel this is going to give a bad reputation to bloggers. The blogging community is grounded in transparency and some people feel that if bloggers are giving favorable reviews for profit and not disclosing that information it will have a negative impact on the blogging community in general.

What about the fact that very few if any website owners (I have seen one in five years) disclose that they are being paid to host googles ads? Any website owner can tell you that most people who are not making money online don't realize that those ads are advertising. I realize it states in small print that they are just ads but most people overlook that part and click on the links believing that the website owner they have come to trust believes the ad is a good company and supports it. If we are going to bash payperpost bloggers for not disclosing they are writing advertisements then shouldn't we do something about making sure our visitors know that the advertising they are seeing is not neccesarilly endorsed by us?

What if my blog tells you upfront that I am writing advertising and being paid for it? If all bloggers were required to do this would all the naysayers feel better about it?

I am still on the fence about joining payperpost and after I have given some thought to these questions I may go ahead and do it. I can tell you right upfront if I do decide to sign up I will put a disclosure on my blog. I don't want to risk my reputation. :)

Escaping Work At Home Scams

Work at home scams’ are one of the fantabulous creations of criminal minds. Some of them are so very cleverly designed that, barring a few which are blatant, they appear very legitimate. Preying on weak people that are starved for money, these scam masters target vulnerable people through ads run in newspapers and Internet classifieds.

Escaping these scams means not taking the bait and calls for lots of grit and analytical thinking so as not to miss to miss a genuine opportunity. The aim of this article is not to list opportunities but to help you to develop a more critical line of thinking.

How Work at Home Scams Operate

What you must keep in mind is that scam operators take refuge under the premise that running an ad, even under false pretenses, is not tantamount to breaking the law. This is because at any point in time, any opportunity is possible in theory. Plus, the ads are very carefully worded, probably in consultation with legal experts.

1. Suspect any offers and ads that promise huge sums of money for a peanut of an investment. Ads that don’t make economic sense will not stand the scrutiny of time and common sense. If you fall for this type of ad, the operator will have made money and you will have lost yours.

2. If you are asked to pay for any kind of registration or membership, test them by asking to reduce the amount of your first payment – I guarantee that they will refuse. Ask for references, someone that you can talk to, in the area that you live in. I suspect even this will be met with a cold response or a refusal.

3. The mother of work-at-home scams started with MLM (multi-level-marketing), the so-called high paying job. (With due respect to genuine companies, we are talking about scams one.) MLM works on the theory of passing on the marketing cost to the consumer against all purchases. Sounds good, doesn’t it! What they don’t tell you is you need to invest a lot of effort plus a lot of money to see any income. Additionally, you get this chain started only when you have a threshold number of customers under you (called downline,) and they purchase some minimum amount of goods regularly. Well, why won’t this work? Number one: the payback theory works if payback occurs instantaneously, not a month later. Number two: The goods are either expensive or worthless. Number three: Your returns are only proportional to your downline. Number four: Costly maintenance (training workshops and seminars.)

4. The best way to begin to work at home is to look around for jobs in your town. If someone across the country can hire you, why not a real company in the city where you live? You can judge your employer by meeting them in person.

Avoiding the lure of work-at-home scams is all about applying the common-sense test. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

VMC Satellite is an opportunity that many people are already successful at. As a VMC Satellite affiliate your job is to promote television satellite systems. That is it. The company takes care of the actual sales and the installation etc. You just promote the dish using your affiliate ID.

This is a message from a thread in a forum that I found which deals with the subject of ezdatajobs. I know I have talked about this kind of work from home before but I wanted to share this with you. These types of jobs can be confusing for some people because they sound like your typical data entry position and it seems like you will be working from home for an actual company. Here is the message which explains what happened to one person:

"Two weeks ago I answered an email that took me to a site called ezdatajobs offering a data entry job. I would be working for these companies filling out forms online and that information would be provided for me in the members area. Sounded exactly what I was after as I needed more time for my family especially my daughter who has a serious disability. As my current job is a casual position, I do not work, I do not get paid. So I thought great extra income for those times I can not go to work. Big mistake! I paid my money $99.95 (oh by the way I am from Australia so the $99.95 is about $135.00 AU). After paying, it took me to an instructions area which I found to be totally confusing for the most part and misleading. There appeared to be no members area and when I emailed their help address, the email was returned, marked could not deliver, address unknown. The same with their contact and refund email addresses. DO NOT BELIEVE THEIR MONEY BACK GUARANTEE OR REFUND. They do not refund the money and they say you have to give it a good try for 60 days before you can apply for a refund and by then you have no chance. First you have to sign up for a clickbank account that is the easy part. Then you have to choose what companies to work for and as there are 10000+ companies who do you go with. You then get hoplinks for those companies. Then you have to sign up with google adwords and/or overture, pay more money and then place ads for the companies you choose. As the system work on a Cost Per Click you could be paying out something like $300 per month just in advertising and that is for each company you choose. And all before you have been paid a cent. As all the companies work on a commisssion based income, unless there is a direct sale from your advert using your hoplink, you get paid nothing. I am not saying that no-one has not benefited from this system but it appears to me that those who have, are people advertising these particular data entry programs that make the money. That is where it was a moral dilemma for me. I just could not advertise something that was misleading and confusing to someone else and have them sucked in like I was.
I was also enquiring about dataprocessors.org but I have received an email this morning and it also appears that these people run the same sort of program as the others. Anyway these are my comments. I was new to all of this two weeks ago and I wish I had known about your site before paying out any money. If anyone has any information on how to find out about legitimate internet businesses or to do checks on them before signing up I would greatly appreciate it."

Work at home television ads

At least three times a day I see television advertising telling me that I can work from home and make thousands of dollars a week or a day working part time. They show me all these regular people who have bought big beautiful homes and cars and these people tell me they made $9000 in just one day!

I always wonder what the real deal is behind these advertisements and tell myself that tomorrow I will do some research and figure it out but I always forget. Today for some reason I remembered!

The surprising part was that it only took me about two minutes to figure it out. I am amazed to think of how many people go directly to these websites and don't take the two minutes to do the research though. That is exactly what these companies are banking on though.

When you go to the websites they tell you right up front that they are a "referral service". Guess what this means for you? Spam! Tons of it!

It all looks very harmless. Go to the website, put in your name, address and phone number and you will be told almost immediately the secrets of working from home.

What really happens? I am guessing that one of two things happens, either way though your information is passed along to people who will inundate you with ways you can "work from home".

In one scenario, your information is sold to these people. A good list of 10 thousand targeted leads can be sold for a very high amount of money and Im talking about a lot more than a few thousand dollars. In the second scenario, you information is given outright and if you purchase the work at home information the originator of your information will get a commission. I don't imagine these places that are paying for television advertising are just spending all that money to help you be able to work from home.

As you can see the owners of this particular website have already been threatened and I get plenty of that on my own.. lol.. the funny thing is that I found this website by searching on the website that I see advertised all the time, however that particular website is not in the list here. They all seem to be owned by the same company though. This means that just because the website you see advertised isn't in the list doesn't mean it isn't the same thing.

What is a scam?

Yesterday I talked about some of the ways you can tell whether or not an opportunity is a scam. Today I was thinking more about the same subject so I wanted to ask you, how do you define a scam?

Is it when you purchase what you think is an opportunity but turns out to be information? Is it strictly when you don't get what you orginally paid for, say in the case of someone promising a job and they take your money and never contact you? Is it something else? Pyramid schemes? Ponzi schemes?

Scam Warnings

I thought it was important to share this information. Lately there has been some controversy about whether or not it is "okay" to sell information on working from home. People of course have been selling information for a long time of course and on the internet there are tons and tons of people who sell information on how to work from home.

My personal opinion is that selling information is akin to a used car salesman selling a lemon. If the seller is upfront about the information they are selling and you know exactly what to expect then more power to them. However if they are hiding behind phrases that make it sound like you will be working for an actual company and recieiving a paycheck from that company, then I feel they are lacking integrity.

While doing some research for this blog today I was thrilled to find that BBB agrees with me!

Is it a scam?

Today I want to clarify what this blog is about and how it works. It is not all about scams. It is about work at home opportunities and what you can expect.

It is important that when you are looking for a way to work from home that you do all your research so you are not surprised. If someone tells you that they will show you how to make money from home you can bet your bottom dollar that they are just going to send you information. I remember a few years ago when I had the opportunity to read an ebook that was selling for about $95. It was poorly written and explained that you could make money online by writing your own ebook and selling it. Were the people who bought this book scammed? No. They paid for information and information was delivered. Did the people who bought this ebook feel like they were scammed? A lot did, yes.

The job of this blog is to help you know and understand what you will be getting into with various businesses and opportunities.

A lot of people promote and or sell information that can usually be found for free if you look hard enough. Once you start seeing the same terms and phrases used over and over you will have a good idea of what exactly is being offered and you can make a decision if it is information you are willing to pay for.

Again, I am not making the determination here that any one place or offer is a scam. I just want you to have the information you need to make a good choice.

Difrawis Instant Human Resources

Instant Human Resources. Okay this one is VERY complicated. This company searches through careerbuilder and finds peoples resumes and responds to them. They offer jobs through legitimate companies but it doesn' t appear these companies are involved with IHR at all!

There is a legitimate company IHRsoftware and THEY are real.

:No one is really sure what the deal is with Difrawis Instant Human Resources are but they are sure fuffling some feathers with the real companies!

Blogging has become a popular way to make money and Blogitive offers bloggers a way to make money pretty easily.

After your blogs are approved for blogitive they will email you "offers". These offers are typically words to use with a specific link. You might have the words "dog food" with a link to a dog food advertiser. For every offer you accept and if your article is approved you will get paid $5.

It is a pretty simple way to add to your income. The fun part is trying to figure out how to get the words to fit into your blog and make sense..

The Angel Company is one of my very favorite companies and the reps I know just love it!

The Angel Company sells stamping supplies for stamping, scrapbooking, crafts, making cards, etc. The think I love about their stamps is the format they make them in.

When you buy the stamps you get a sheet of rubber stamps that are uncut typically. They also have others but this is my very favorite. After you cut them out you use a special tacky glue and mount the stamps on an acrylic block. Whenever you want to use a different stamp just peel the one you are done with off the block and mount the new one on the block. The tacky glue lasts a long time on the rubber stamps so this is always easy.

Affiliate advertising in the traditional sense

In the past I have covered a lot about the data entry "programs" that are really another form of affiliate advertising. Today I want to talk about affiliate advertising in the traditional sense. There is a lot of confusion about this and every day I read more and more questions from people who don't understand the difference between the two forms of affiliate advertising.

Typically, affiliate advertising means that you build a website or even a blog these days and put up advertising for different companies. There are a number of affiliate companies that handle hundreds of different companies.

When your website is ready you can either search out companies yourself to be an affiliate for or join one of the companies like shareasale, cj and Linkshare. These are three of the biggest affiliate companies. Through them you can sign up to advertise for other companies, they deal with companies that sell everything from clothing and makeup to electronics and insurance. There are tons of possibilities.

There are a couple of different ways I have seen people handle who they are going to advertise for. For myself, I build a website and then choose which companies will compliment the subject my website is about. Others though take a different approach, they look at the companies that are available, what they are paying per sale and then build a website around those products. This is a very profitable way to do it.

Once you have everything in place you need to start promoting your website. There are actually a lot of steps to take, you will need to get it listed in directories and search engines, talk about it everywhere and get traffic.

That's pretty much all there is to it. It sounds fairly simple and easy and it is but it also takes a lot of work and time but the rewards are worth it!

I just saw where someone on a message board had a question about this business opportunity. I tried to reseach it so I could talk about it here. Unfortunately, I just don't understand it. So this posting is a little different. I am asking for your help. Have any of you heard of this opportunity? Do any of you understand what exactly it is that they are advertising or selling? I clicked through the order process as far as I could and it just didn't make sense to me. What are you buying? What are they selling? Where are the ads going? As far as I can tell you are buying advertising space. However it seems like anyone can buy it. What if you don't have anything to sell. It also says that their sales reps will sell advertising space for you. Does this mean they are selling space on your website? When you go through the order form each level of membership also includes bonuses. What exactly are those for? What exactly do you get paid for? Is it pay per click advertising as the name implies? Start a Cleaning Business

I found this blog all about starting a cleaning business. I loved it so much I am writing about it here and I also reviewed it on my other blog.

I think I like this business because you automatically have a huge list of customers. This is a service that businesses need as well as individuals.

My husband worked nights for a cleaning company for awhile and I also have a friend who works for a cleaning company. It always amazes me when I hear about the places that they were hired to clean. I always thought it was strictly something that either rich people or businesses who needed night cleaning utilized. However there is more to it. After a new home or business is built they need someone to go in and clean up. This can be extremely time consuming when you think of all the sawdust and dirt and grit that is left behind by the builders. I always thought they were just very neat when they built a place! :)

There are also elderly people who can't keep up with their homes, there are people who are just too busy to clean and the lists go on. If you can set up a reasonable price I might even take you up on it! As I was just thinking about this I realized I also have two friends who run their own cleaning business! It really is a terrific opportunity and if you are looking for a business to start you might really enjoy this one.

I came across the name Quixtar just a couple of days ago and thought something just didn't seem to make sense to me. I had planned to look into it more later that day but got sidetracked. Then yesterday I recieved an email from someone letting me know this would be a great company to add to this blog and they were even nice enough to give me a starting point.

There was recently a whole investigation into this company. It is a company much like Amway, you sign up to sell their products and make commissions and you can also recruit others onto your team and make money from their sales as well. There are lots of people who will testify they are making a lot of money every year with this company. According to the investigation one of the recruiters said it was possible to make a quarter of a million dollars a year with only an investment of around 15 hours a week! Well I would love to sign up to make that kind of money!

As the investigation continued the reporters were heavily encouraged to go to seminars and read a lot of motivational materials. The motivational books and tapes were all available through Quixtar distributors.

Make Money Watching TV

This claim kind of surprised me and I found it a little interesting because I could see where it might work but at the same time it isn't anything that someone would be glad they paid to find out.

Basically you start watching television and pay attention to the commercials, notice how you feel when you watch it, look for any errors and blatant mistakes. Pay attention to what time the commercials are on etc.

Once you have a good packet of information especially concerning errors, start contacting businesses that are advertising in your area and see if you can't get them to hire you to do the same thing for them. You will watch their commercials and give them advice on how they can be better, you could also let them know when their competitors are advertising and how you compare their commercials with the competitions.

You hire out your services to watch commercials. I really don't know if anyone has ever done this or if it could be done. I would imagine that most companies who care actually have in house people who already do this but you never know, Anything is possible!

Omega Pharma Secretarial position

This is an exerpt from a message I found from Adrianna. Adrianna answered an advertisement from Eric Fortner. He had posted a work at home opportunity as a Secretary for Omega Pharma. I will post the emails as they appeared in the message. The first is from Eric himself. The rest are what happened when Adrianna started looking into this more:

"I recently applied for a work-at-home position on Careerbuilder.com for a Secretary position. I received a contract from a Eric Fortner, typed in my information (not my SSN#) and received my first task via e-mail doing some data entry for a frist_AID.doc.

I have NOT been asked for any money, I have researched that the company does exsit, and can not find any negativity in any of these forums or searches about this individual or company. I am currently waiting for verification from an e-mail I sent to the listed contact info from the website he gave me www.Omega-Pharma.be as to whether or not he works there.

If anyone has heard of this before or is currently working for them, please post and let me know. Or after reading all of this please post your thoughts if this is a scam or legit.

This is one you will definately need to do some research on if you are thinking of joining. From what I have been able to gather. 1 Step System is a marketing tool. You spend around $600 to get the marketing information. It is supposed to tell you how to market your business and drive traffic to your websites, etc, etc. Everything to do with marketing. Now you can use that information to make your business a success or you can sign up to resell the 1 Step System and make money as well. From what I understand you pay a monthly fee and you use the marketing techniques you learned to get people to come to your 1 Step System website and register for a phone call. The call is placed by one of the owners if I have it right. If he talks anyone into buying the system you make $500 for the sale.

It is all a little weird to me and there are lots of threads on message boards where you can do some research. From the things I have learned I would personally stay away from this one but do some looking around and decide for yourself.

Telecommuting is a very legitimate way to work from home and make money. Telecommuting is a "job". You work for a company from your home. Sometimes the companies will provide you with a computer, software, phone line etc. Other times you provide the computer and phone line and they reimburse you for calls. There are many ways it can be set up. The big difference is that you are working for a real company, this does not mean you answer an ad in the classifieds and pay a fee. You actually fill out a real application, have a background check sometimes, get interviewed etc. One place you can find out about these jobs is at wahm.com, they update their list very often with real job listings and you can also see a list of the companies that others work for and apply with those companies as well. The important thing to remember when you are looking to telecommute is that it should be JUST like if you went out to a company and filled out an application. The process is the SAME. www.plan4power.org is set up as a matrix. My personal thought on these types of deals is that they are schemes. The people who start them make some money because they started it and then they build up all the hype to keep people getting in. Kind of like the old pyramid schemes. When you go to the website they don't give you much information. You have to join first naturally. Then you can find out what is going on. Basically they tell you that they are all working as a group to sell an e-book (they give no clue what this book is about) and then once you have referred a certain amount of people and gotten them to join you get to move into the second phase and everyone starts sharing in the profits of this ebook. I have to give this one a thumbs down.

Here is a little bit from one of their hawkers:

Couponworks.com is apparently a home job where you pay a fee $39.99 or $29.99 (red flag right there) and then they send you a booklet with instructions.

You are supposed to "process" coupons by putting them in order on a worksheet, you simply send the worksheets and coupons back in and then you get paid. Wow. How easy is that?

Well the truth is, first YOU have to find the coupons, they don't send them to you. You list the coupons on their worksheet, send all the coupons in and get paid. That is, IF the worksheets meet their specifications exactly. I was able to find ONE person who had sent in three worksheets and got paid for half of ONE worksheet. The rest were rejected for whatever reason.

So, first you pay for the materials, then you pay for the newspapers and magazines to find the coupons and then you do all the work to get them in the right order and typed into the worksheets and then you MIGHT get paid.

I have not found a single person who was happy with this company or their experiences. I would give it a big NO THANKS...

I just found www.mygooglejob.com and it looks to be another name for a dataentrypro type program.

You will pay them money and they will tell you to go to clickbank, set up an account, and choose some companies to start advertising for. Then you will need to set up an adwords account at google. Once you have done that you will place advertisements for the companies you affiliated with. You will pay a certain amount of money every time someone clicks on one of your advertisements.

You make money whenever someone clicks on the ad and then makes a purchase. Now in reality if you can find great companies this all might actually be feasible. However I have heard of people who spent more placing the ads than they ever made from actual sales.

I love the part in this advertisement that explains you can make good money running and maintaining a website but that it takes a lot of work.

In my opinion affiliate advertising has gotten a bad name because of the above type programs. However the fact is you CAN set up a website and WORK it everyday and make money from affiliate advertising. nbsp;

Medical Transcription

Medical Transcription is a legitimate job that allows you to make money and in some cases you can do this from home.

Doctors dictate a lot of their patient notes into a tape recorder and then the transcriptionist listens to those notes and types them up. The transcriptionist will generally use a dictation machine to do this.

To be successful in this type of work you need to have a good knowledge of medical terminology, the english language and great typing skills.

There are a number of schools who will teach you these things and also how to use the dictation machine. Taking these courses will not guarantee you a job. In fact most places want you to have experience as well. Of course this is the typical catch 22, you can't get a job without experience and you can't get the experience without a job.

Some people will volunteer their services and prove themselves. Others network and wait for an opportunity. There are ways to make it happen. Get a job in a doctors office or hospital for instance until a transcription job comes open. In fact I worked in a podiatrists office at one time and I remember their transcriptionist had to take maternity leave and I volunteered. I had never done transcription, never used a dictation machine or anything even close. I taught myself how to use the machine which was fairly easy and I already knew most of the terminology from working in the office. If this had been a career choice that I wanted to persue it would have been just that easy to get started.

I don't know if you actually need to take any of the courses to do this type of work in your area but the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists has a great website with lots of information. You should definately spend some time here if this is an area you are thinking of persuing:

Liberty League International appears to sell information. You in turn sell this information to others and make money. There is a lot of disagreement about how ethical this concept is. I read a lot of reports from people who stated that after you spend your hard earned money (and it isn't cheap) to get the original CD's and binder you will then be pressured into spending thousands of dollars to go to conferences.

I didn't watch much TV and radio before I got in to LLI, so that helped already. I spent thousands on ads and leads and called over 1100 people. I got qualified my first 3 weeks. Then all hell broke loose. I could not signup anyone for the life of me.

I poured my heart, life and soul and sacrificed things. LLI was my life and it was all I cared about. I thought shane was God and I loved all the people in the business. I borrowed $10,000 from my dad. I told my dad I was positive about everything and I even faxed him an agreement that I would pay him back in full by April 4th 2005 (I remember it very vividly). I already had my own business so i used all my earnings on LLI. I had the gas shut off in my house, I had the water shut off and also the electric shut off. I still till this day have all those notices they hang on your door knob. Our new house of only 6 months entered foreclosure. We had this house custom built to our liking, everything to carpet, flooring, wall texture and paint. But I had one thing in mind and it was all about "where I was going". I guess God tried to give me a clue and I didn't respond.

After 6 months of poring my life into this business I lost my house and my wife and I got a divorce. She hated the business. I now live in a 1 bedroom apartment and see my son 1 week a month and I'm $25000 in debt. My life turned upside down.

Few months after I got my self back up on my feet and got my self back into what I enjoyed doing more. Long story-short I now make 6 figures a year and met a beautiful women that loves people that are determined to reach thier goals. I'm planning on moving to Las Vegas to enjoy the heat.

LLI is just like anything else, you have to work just as hard. All MLM's are the same, they take the same amount of work and time and money, you just need to find out what is right for you. Better yet, open your own business and work it hard like you would LLI or anything else.

I'll be a millionaire someday but not because of LLI. I don't blame anyone for anything, you just need to do what you are good at and find a way to make money doing that. Forcing yourself doesn't work, as you see I have tried that.

Nigerian scams

I was looking at a "Get rich in 14 days" opportunity to find out exactly what it was about and share it with you when I ran across this site instead: http://richpeoplebiz.tripod.com/

I decided this would be more fun to write about!

At some point either you or someone you know has gotten those letters and emails from some person in Nigeria or elsewhere since this is spreading. The letters usually state that the writer is a wealthy person or had a wealthy relative who died and now the government wants to take their money. They need your help. Would you please allow them to deposit a huge sum of money into your bank account and in return they will pay you a hefty fee. It is worth it for them to pay the fee because they will still get to keep most of their money.

Of course this is all a scam.

I have oftened wondered how and why they decide to do this. Well I think this website explains it all.

It is just like all the get rich quick websites we are bombarded with but it is targeted towards Nigerians and promises them they can make lots of money and it will even help their country get out of poverty.

There are probably a lot of people in Nigeria who are even more desperate to make decent money and escape than what you would see in other places.

The part I found really funny is at the end. If you scroll down you can find out how to make money by exporting Ox gallstones or breeding snails.

My point is this is a pretty obvious scam.. Take a look and imagine you are a Nigerian who is desperate to make money. Would you fall for it? When you are looking at businesses and programs for yourself try to keep this site in mind and see if you can find similiarities.

Power of People Network

The Power of People Network is a "gifting" program. Apparently you are supposed to gift a few thousand dollars to a person and then a bunch of people will gift you a few thousand dollars. Well now that sounds like win win situation, NOT..

Although the claim is that this is not a pyramid scheme it is pretty darn close. They have apparently been operating just under the law. Even so it seems they were shut down anyway.

Be aware that they have reemerged though using the acronym POPN.

You will see ad's like "Im POPN are you?" This is the same people and you will lose your money. I can't believe they ask for such a high amount of money to do this. In one thread I was reading they even admitted that it was illegal to do this through the postal service and that any money sent through the postal service would be refused! How crazy is that? Intersol Services

Intersol Services is just one name that this type of scheme falls under. Lately I have ran across a number of people falling for it too.

You will typically recieve an email from someone who saw your resume on a job site or it will just come through as spam. I will post a copy of the email at the end here.

It all sounds really great as you can see but what it really amounts to is that you will be sending out the SAME type of email and you will make money from each person who pays you to get the same information. You will basically charge people $10 or so and then tell them to place the same ads, send the same emails, and get people to pay them for each "application processed"... What a disappointment for people who are truly looking for a job. Here is the email you get:

Recovery Manager

This one has been around for awhile. Supposedly you buy software for around $30 that enables you to get lists from places like DHL, Fed Ex etc. There is even a version involving HUD. These lists are supposed to let you find people who the companies owe money to. You apply for the refund on behalf of the customer and you get to keep 50% or so.

Well now.. if a company owes me money Im not about to pay anyone 50% of the refund because they applied for me. Moreover, I don't think you can legally apply for someone elses refund. If you are not the person owed the money you can't do anything about it.

I don't think this scheme is possible. If you have tried it or know of anyone else who has I would love to hear from you! Leave a comment.

Internet Speedway

From what I have been able to tell, Internet Speedway is a company that will set you up with an online store for a monthly fee.

The first thing to take into consideration is that there are a lot of companys you can find online who will allow you to do the same thing but for free.

The second thing to consider is that these types of stores are all over the place so you will have some pretty tough competition. With most of the online store programs I have seen you do get some pretty good wholesale prices for your products. What I have heard with Internet Speedway though is that they charge you the same price that you could purchase from Overstock for.

The way it is supposed to work is that you pay a fee, Internet Speedway sets up a website for you and then you promote the website and sell products. If someone visits your site and buys a coat for $100 and your cost for the coat is $25 then you make a $75 profit.

My concern with Internet Speedway besides what I stated above is that I can't find anyone who has been happy with their program.

Apparently they have radio ads running that claim they will send you a free informational cd. When people call to get the free cd they are told there is a shipping and handling charge of $9.99. Some people have been persistant and demanded the free cd and have been told it will take up to 6 weeks to recieve but if they pay the $9.99 they will have it in a couple of days! Give me a break...

Here is the real kicker.. a few months after getting the cd most people are starting to see a monthly charge of $69.99 on their cards! So they call and then find out that apparently the cd was a free trial and since they didn't cancel they now owe this $69.95 for the next 5 months or so. When they try to get the company to cancel they are told that if they don't pay they will be turned over to collections! You can read all about these experiences here: Internet Speedway thread

I would be very cautious about joining this program.

Work at home signs

Today I was trying to decide what to write about so I did a search on "work at home" since that is how I got started it made sense and I was sure I would find some of those websites that drove me crazy in the beginning. Instead I found something more interesting.

One of the articles I ran across talked about all the signs you see when you are driving around town. It probably doesn't matter where you live. Take a drive and on most street corner you will see signs touting "work at home!" "Make $1000 a day working at home" "have a computer? Make money!", etc etc. You've seen them!

I remember a few years ago my father in law asking me if it was really possible to make money from home, he had seen the signs. He didn't want my mother in law to be out working but they needed her income. At the time I really didn't know if it was possible but I suspected that if it were possible to make as much as these signs were claiming everyone would be doing it.

Even though I now work at home I still don't believe it is possible to make thousands of dollars a day just by calling the number on these signs and I don't suggest you try it or not. Whenever you sign up for any work at home opportunity you really should keep your common sense handy. Do your research and ask lots of questions. Take the time to find out how you are expected to make this kind of money and before you spend your hard earned money find and talk to someone who is really making money and will be honest with you within the company. If it sounds fishy then just walk away.

Taking Surveys not a scam

I was talking to my mother in law last night about taking surveys and mystery shopping as a way to make extra money and she brought up something that I want to share with all of you.

She has known since I started my website that I have a free list of survey companies that pay. She would like to take surveys and make some extra money since she doesn't have time to mystery shop during the normal work week.

So as we are talking she tells me, "I have tried taking the surveys they send me in my email but they take forever and then I get to the end and they want me to complete offers, it is always a waste of my time."

Well, yes it was! The true survey companies will never send you an email asking you to join. At least I have never gotten one. They don't need to spam anyone to get members.

When you recieve these emails saying "Coke vs Pepsi" take our survey and you could win a $500 shopping spree, it is probably spam, just delete it.

When you sign up with a legitimate survey company and they send you an email to take a survey you will recognize it as being a good survey. If you don't recognize the name of the survey company be very cautious. If your offer is to be entered into some outrageous contest, shopping sprees, televisions, cars, etc. It is probably not a good survey. Most of the good companies will enter you into a contest for taking the screener but it is typically a drawing for $500 or $100 I think one is even $1000 but not cars, washers, shopping sprees, etc. In fact last month I won one of the drawings for $100!

Telecommuting Jobs

Truth be told, probably at least 90% of the people I meet who are looking to work at home are looking for a job. They want to work from home but for someone else versus starting their own business.

Because so many people are looking for these types of jobs it has become very fertile ground for scammers. They set up sites to make it look like you are applying for a data entry position when in reality they are just wanting to sell you information about how to places ads online or some such nonsense.

Try to keep in mind that these jobs are in high demand. You can apply but you might not hear back right away or at all. Apply with as many companies as possible to increase your chances and keep trying. If you need to be working immediately, check your local paper or think about going a different route with your own business or some other income builder.

Paid to read/Paid to click programs

This is a hard one for me because personally I don't find a worthwhile way to spend my time. On the other hand I know a few people who are perfectly happy with these programs as way to make a few extra bucks.

This is not way to make a full time income.

Here is what you do: You sign up with one of the programs, lets say a paid to read program. They will send you emails everyday and you read the emails. You get paid a certain amt for each email. Generally you open the email click a link within it so they know you have read it and then you have to spend a certain amount of time at the website you were directed to. It isn't a large amount of time, I think the one I tried you had to stay at least 30 seconds.

Once you have reached a certain amount of money in your account you can cash out and they send you a check.

If this is something you would like to try I would strongly suggest you join a message board where members of the different programs communicate with each other. This is a great way to save yourself the headaches of joining a program that doesn't deliver what they promise.

Autosurfs/Investment Programs

This one will probably touch some nerves but it is todays topic.

Recently there has been a lot of news coverage on this type of program thanks to 12 Daily Pro.

Remember I am not giving it a thumbs up or a thumbs down. Just my opinion. I watched this program from the start and I have seen people who believe very strongly in it.

I think it is one of those deals that with just using your common sense you can see what is happening.

In this type of program and I will use 12DP as an example here, you "upgrade" by placing money into the system. Lets say $600.00, after your "upgrade" expires you collect 12% and then you are free to "upgrade" again.

For a lot of people just using the basic good sense of not investing more than they could lose was good enough incentive to give it a try. Once they got their investment back they took it out and played with the earnings. This is all fine and good in theory.

In this type of program you can also earn money from getting others to join and invest and then you earn part of their earnings.

This is where I personally believe a lot of people are going to find themselves regretting joining.

Look at it from this perspective: I believe the only possible way they can be paying out 12% is if they are taking money from the other members to pay you. Take money from Sal to pay Joe in otherwords. What does this make the program? A ponzi, which is illegal.

The defense to this is that they were supposedly accepting advertising dollars. Im not real sure how that comes in to play and maybe it is a loophole they found.

If I am right though and it is a Ponzi and you invested money, no biggie.. If you iinvested money AND brought in referrals then you might be looking at a whole different barrel of pickles. That would make you an accessory to the crime.

I believe this is all currently under investigation and I personally can't wait to see what the outcome is. There were a whole lot of naysayers and a whole lot of supporters. It seemed to be pretty well divided and I am just anxiously waiting to see who was right.

In the meantime I would be very careful in joining this type of program. If you want to invest your money we have a stock market!

Transfer Agents

In yesterdays post I briefly mentioned work at home jobs that have a variety of job titles the most common being "Transfer Agent".

What they want you to in a nutshell is put money that they send you into your bank account. You then keep a portion of the money and send the rest to them through Western Union.

Seems simple enough right? One website I visited recently even admitted that they were doing it this way to avoid taxation fees overseas!

Heres what can happen: First you give them full access to your bank account because they ask for not only your account number but your routing number as well. Now a lot of "smart" people decide they will just set up a bank account just for these transactions and then they won't be risking their own money. Wrong! Remember the nigerian scams? So you get a money order or cashiers check from the company, deposit it into your "safe" account, usually by the next day or maybe second day the money is available to you so you take out all but what your fee and Western Union the rest to the company. A week or so later you get a notice from your bank that the check or money order was fake and now you are responsible for all that money you sent. Money sent through Western Union can't be traced.

There is another version of this where the company tells you they need a go between for them and ebay buyers. This might be the same thing happening in the above scheme or the above scheme might really be part of the scheme outlined next.

One lady I know who signed up for this one got the money into her account through paypal. She was then supposed to Western Union it. She got a little nervous and tried contacting the "buyer" who it turns out was part of the scam. What these guys were actually doing was taking the money they got from "phishing" and trying to get it into their accounts without being traceable. So they stole money from peoples bank accounts, transferred it to her bank account and then she was supposed to keep a portion and Western Union the rest.

The one thing all of these types of scams have in common is that they are making sure the money can't be traced back to them in the end.

If you run across this type of job and find yourself tempted please trust your instincts and don't get involved. It would be wise to report the company. How great would it be if we all got together and put a stop to these schemes?

Okay, I just realized I can't really have this blog and not address this issue. Im not sure you can do a search on anything anymore without getting bombarded with ads saying that you can make hundreds of dollars an hour taking surveys.

Here is the claim: You pay $39.95 or something close and they will send you surveys. In the case of one you will immediately get a survey worth $25! So wow.. that means you get almost all your money back right? Wrong...

Here is the way it works: You pay the money and then you get an email that gives you a password to get into their database. You sign up with each survey company individually and then occasionally you will get survey offers.

Here is the catch. These lists usually also include a bunch of other sites that will sell you lists, they include survey sites that just want to harvest your email and send you spam and they include sites that will let you complete surveys as long as you sign up for their offers.

Here is the truth: There are a lot of survey stes that will pay you money for taking surveys. You will not make hundreds of dollars an hour everyday. If you sign up with the majority of survey companies you can probably expect anywhere from 5-20 survey offers a day. Most of these will offer to enter you into a drawing. These original surveys are actually screeners and you will want to take them. Once you get through the screener and qualify for the study THAT is when they will make you an offer to continue on for a certain amount of money or a new product test.

Now there are some studies that automatically tell you that you will make a certain amount of money if you qualify for the study. I qualified for a $200 study last week. By the way, I also won one of the drawings.. $100 last week. So it was a good week!

This isn't a typical week though. I generally make about $50-$75 a week taking surveys but there have also been weeks when I didn't make anything.

The longer you take the surveys, the more you get offered.

Now these lists also promise you something like over 500 survey sites. Well that might be true but by the time you weed through the junk sites you are down to a number closer to 200 or so and of those only about 20 send out surveys regularly.
